Privacy becomes more precious everyday, and so does Open Source…

Yesterday I was visiting my friends in ITWorx, and they were totally bugged by the new gateway that the IS has installed to monitor and control users’ access to the internet…

That new gateway is called “Thread Management Gateway” from Microsoft, and guess what? it SUCKS, BIG TIME…

Their 1st impression that it made things terribly slower, all the browsing, all the downloads, and even google suggestions, as soon as google tries to make suggestions to your browser will just redirect you to the google home page again erasing out everything you have written in the google search box…

And of course google suggestions everywhere else just failed to do their jobs…

Anyway, I decided to have a look around and see what makes this product different from ISA, and to my surprise I found that it supports something called “HTTPS outbound inspection”, in other words, it intercepts the HTTPS traffic, decrypts it, reads it, and then passes it on !!!!!

For more information on how it works…

Can you believe that it generates a private key, public key, certificate for every HTTPS site you attempt to access, and you have to accept its CA as trusted in order for you to be able to continue doing your daily browsing normally??? Imagine the performance hit on the IO, and on the gateway machine itself !!!!

How rude is that ??? giving the network administrator access to all my secured HTTPS traffic, my internet banking password, my personal email password, my encrypted chat traffic…

How -on earth- am I suppose to trust such platform ???

I’m really speechless, Microsoft won’t just have enough before it invades the privacy of everyone, either by TPM, DRM, Activation Processes, and now this…

They just keep doing it, tightening the users’ right, invading their privacy; one step at a time….

And yes, their biggest joke which they called “Trusted Computing Platform” (aka TPM), they call it trusted because it would only perform as the Makers/Vendors just as they want, whereas a truly trusted computing platform is the platform which I can entrust with all my sensitive data, personal information, etc etc…

I’m speechless, guys, stick to Open Source, this is the only refuge for those who care about their privacy, and truly trusted computing platforms…

So, Microsoft, what’s next ??

  1. Microsoft is very happy because they are selling these products to mentally tired people.
