Thinking Green…Vertical Axis Wind Turbine…

Green energy, free power, it’s all concepts we dream of, and some of us may have thought about it deeply, esp. with all oil prices rising sky-high (it used to reach over 100$), now it’s relatively low, but eventually it will rise again…

Also not to mention the amount of carbon-dioxide produced from burning the oil…

As if that isn’t enough, the efficiency of oil-based generators is very very low, as low as 30%, which basically means, if an amount of gasoline burns producing 100 watts worth of power, at the generator output you only get 30 watts of electric power, the remaining (70 watts) are simple wasted…

So if you pay 100$ for gasoline in a generator, you’re wasting 70$, and only making use of 30$ !!!!

So, green energy to rescue…

Think about it for a while, every terrain has its own renewable yet clean energy source…

In the gulf area, they have lots of sun light, almost 365 days in the year, but not much wind…

Sea shores, may not have that much of sun light, but they certainly have plenty of wind power…

However, harvesting solar power (using solar panels) isn’t cheap, and the technology isn’t simple to implement, but cheaper approaches can be considered esp. if you have plenty of sun light…

Wind power is relatively easy to harvest, we already have two working models

HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine), and VAWT (Vertical Axis Wind Turbine), check Wikipedia’s page for more information…

Personally, I think that VAWT are easier to implement, even on a small scale, like a small house, small business, why not??

Imagine every house with its own VAWT turbine (or grid of turbines) mounted on its roof, or in its back yard, imagine cities that completely run on sustainable yet clean and FREE power ???

In fact I’m planning to build my own VAWT as soon as I’m back in Egypt, where we have plenty of wind, and it’s easier to have access to a blacksmith, and make some custom castings, I’ll try to copy this model from Helix Wind, with some electronics magic, I think I can really get all the lights in the house and all the IT stuff I have (PC, laptop, wireless router, printer, etc, etc) at home running completely on wind power, why not??

I’ve collected all the PDFs I may need to get started, the guys in Helix Wind seem to be very open about their designs, which is a great thing, find them all here
